Asia Argento

Fille du cinéaste Dario Argento et de la comédienne Daria Nicolodi, Asia Argento obtient son premier rôle à 11 ans dans Démons 2 de Lamberto Bava (1986). Depuis toujours, elle clame son attachement au genre en collaborant notamment avec Michele Soavi (Sanctuaire, 1989), George A. Romero (Land of the Dead, 2005), mais aussi son père, maître du giallo, pour Trauma (1993), Le Syndrome de Stendhal (1996) ou Le Fantôme de l’opéra (1998). En parallèle, elle tourne avec des cinéastes comme Nanni Moretti (Palombella rossa, 1989), Patrice Chéreau (La Reine Margot, 1994), Sofia Coppola (Marie-Antoinette, 2006) ou Gus Van Sant pour lequel elle interprète un personnage inspiré de Courtney Love dans Last Days aux côtés de Michael Pitt en 2005. En 2000, elle signe son premier long métrage, Scarlet Diva, construit comme son journal intime réel et fantasmé. En 2004, elle réalise et interprète le rôle principal du Livre de Jérémie, chronique d’un jeune garçon déchiré entre une mère toxicomane se prostituant et des grands-parents pieux. Avec L’Incomprise (2014), Asia Argento aborde à nouveau la question de l’enfance délaissée dans une plongée pop au cœur des années 1980. Membre du jury des longs métrages de Gérardmer en 1999, l’artiste italienne aux talents multiples revient cette fois-ci pour présider ce jury, et devient ainsi la première femme de l’histoire du festival à assurer cette fonction.

She has long maintained her attachment to the genre, collaborating with Michele Soavi (The Church, 1989) and George A. Romero (Land of the Dead, 2005) as well as her father, master of the giallo, on Trauma (1993), The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) and The Phantom of the Opera (1998). At the same time, she has worked with filmmakers such as Nanni Moretti (Red Wood Pigeon, 1989), Patrice Chéreau (Queen Margot, 1994), Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette, 2006) and Gus Van Sant, for whom she played a character inspired by Courtney Love in Last Days opposite Michael Pitt in 2005. In 2000, she directed her first feature film, Scarlet Diva, conceived as her real and fantasized private diary. In 2004, she directed and played the lead role in The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, the chronicle of a young boy torn between a drug addict prostitute mother and religious grandparents. With Misunderstood (2014), Asia Argento again took on the issue of childhood neglect in a pop-culture dive into the heart of the 1980s. Having served on the Gérardmer feature film jury in 1999, the multi-talented Italian artist returns this year as Jury President, making her the first woman to assume this role in the festival’s history.
