Né en 1951 à New York, il réalise en 1979 son premier long métrage, Driller Killer, dans lequel il tient aussi le rôle principal. La reconnaissance internationale vient dans les années 90 avec King of New York, Bad Lieutenant, Body Snatchers et Nos funérailles. En 2002, il remporte pour son film Mary le Prix spécial du Jury au festival de Venise. Il retrouve Willem Dafoe en 2011 pour 4h44, dernier jour sur terre ; ce dernier devient son acteur fétiche.

Born in 1951 in New York, he started in 1979 as director and actor in Driller Killer. In the 90s, he jumped into international spotlight with King of New York, Bad Lieutenant, Body Snatchers and The Funeral. In 2002, he won the Special Jury Grand Prize at Venice for his film Mary. In 2011, he reteamed with Willem Dafoe for 4:44 – Last Day on Earth; the actor became his favorite one.
