Il tourne son premier film, Stereo, en 1969. Il y explore les thèmes qui caractériseront plus tard son travail, notamment la violence et la sexualité, la réalité et la réalité transformée, et l’horreur biologique. Faux-semblants obtient le Grand Prix du Festival d’Avoriaz 1989 ; Crash, le Prix spécial du jury du Festival de Cannes 1996. Il reçoit en 2018 un Lion d’Or à la Mostra de Venise pour l’ensemble de sa carrière.

He shot his first film Stereo in 1969. He already explored some of the themes that would define much of his later work – including violence and sexuality, reality and altered reality, and biological horror. In 1989, he won the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Film Festival with Dead Ringers; the Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1996 with Crash. He received in 2018 at Venice the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
