Né à Osaka au Japon, il étudie le cinéma en Australie à la School of Visual Arts de Sydney. Il accède à la reconnaissance internationale avec son premier long métrage, Versus, l’ultime guerrier, présenté au Festival de Gérardmer 2001 et suivi par d’autres succès comme Azumi (2003) et Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). Midnight Meat Train, son premier film d’horreur tourné à Hollywood, remporte le Prix du Public à Gérardmer en 2009. Downrange est présenté au festival en 2018.
Born in Osaka, Japan, he studied filmmaking in Australia at the School of Visual Arts of Sydney. Versus, his feature debut, premiered at Gérardmer in 2001 and led him to other box-office hits such as Azumi (2003) and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). His first Hollywood film, The Midnight Meat Train, won the Audience Award at Gérardmer in 2009. Downrange was presented at the festival in 2018.
